The Society of Genealogists and Frontis Ltd have recently entered into an agreement which will see The Society publishing many of its unique genealogical collections online in searchable form for the first time. The Society will use the Frontis™ Archive Publishing System to publish transcribed records, digitised documents, facsimiles of books, research notes and other multimedia on an exclusive members’ only section of the Society’s website giving Society’s members even greater access to its remarkable library.
Mike Wood, Chairman of The Society said
“this is a big step forward for the Society, a significant number of our members are from overseas, and within the UK, live some distance from our library and are thus unable to visit the library as often as they would like. We can now begin to make records available to them via the internet and the first of these should appear shortly. Our members have been asking us to publish more of our material exclusively for them and we are now in a position to do this.”
John Kendall, Managing Director of Frontis Ltd, agreed saying
“Frontis is proud to be working in partnership with The Society of Genealogists, the leading organisation for family history research in the UK. The new Frontis service provides The Society with an advanced web publishing capability, which will not only give great added value to its members but also help ensure that it maintains its status as the centre of excellence in its field”.
As well as using some of its existing transcriptions, The Society will use a small army of volunteer transcribers drawn from its twelve thousand members to provide content for the new service. Much of this information is not available elsewhere and will provide a fascinating insight into the lives of our ancestors that cannot be achieved by looking at registers of births, marriages and deaths alone.
